I’m not sure what the fascination is with birds that developers seem to have, but the feathered creatures are continually cropping in up in games (Angry Birds and Must Eat Birds to name just two) where we are asked to fling, fire or throw them about.
For Bird Strike the premise is simple, after starting the World Tour, launch the bird [Gerald] into the air and see if he can reach the required height. Obviously being a bird he cannot fly… oh wait, erm… anyway your job is to help fly Gerald to the top by tilting the device to avoid the obstacles and hazards and collect the rockets and helpful items dotted along the way.
To progress to the next country and unlock the level you need to attain the minimum amount of points which equates to a bronze medal. Once achieved another set of obstacles and route to the top presents itself. Where Bird Strike stands out from other games with similar gameplay, is that when you reach the required height ( in World Tour mode), Gerald gets zapped by a UFO and becomes an invincible radioactive super missile hurtling downwards at break-neck speed – it’s brilliant! During this time you pick-up extra points by destroying everything you were trying to dodge on the way up and it’s damn satisfying and brings a smile to my face each time I successfully reach the UFO for the zapping.
If I was to rate Bird strike solely on the fabulous artwork, quirky, subtle but hugely funny animations and killer sfx and audio, it would get 5 stars no problem. But I have to consider the whole package and I think once completed not many users will revisit Bird Strike, but hang-on, the developers [Prodigy Design] have already added a new game mode (Endless Climb), where Gerald sees how high he can get, so if we all buy it for the cheap price of 59p, I’m sure there will be new levels added in future updates to push the rating even higher.
