Mega Jump is full of bold cartoon artwork with glossy cute characters and equally fitting quirky sfx. The repetitive drum beat audio track isn’t offensive but you may want to disable it after your tenth go! For children and adults alike it’s a visually pleasing game and accessible with it’s simplicity. It’s so simple to play that in the version I downloaded [v1.0.9] there wasn’t a ‘how to play’ screen as all you do is tilt the device left or right to move as your character (which in the current release now has a name) collects coins and power-ups to climb/fly higher.

One of the funny things about Mega Jump is that you don’t really do any jumping apart from the initial jump. Really you are being propelled upwards by the coins, as we all know these make you fly – and rockets and stars etc. The similarities with Bird Strike are uncanny – well drawn, polished vertical-flyer with humour and quirky sound effects. The thing is, that’s all fine, as Mega Jump looks and plays good. However, Bird Strike (currently) has more to it, with the challenges etc, where as Mega Jump is a simple, well, a simplified version with a different skin. And I wouldn’t be surprised if future updates make this game even more like Bird Strike.

I downloaded Mega Jump for free and played it just to review it, but I do enjoy it and will play it every now and again and watch the updates closely (one just came in today). And finally, since downloading it they have already updated it with a ‘character select’ screen with the option to purchase (in-App) the locked characters for 59p each. It might be possible to unlock these characters by progressing through the game so it’s a bit of a cheeky trick by the developers to pray on the younger audience who might get sucked in to owning all the characters.

A well executed ‘casual endless’ game, but maybe they’ll bring out a more original game next time.
