Mashable recently [June 27th] posted an article, by Amy-Mae Elliott, on ‘5 Awesome Arcade Games for the iPhone‘ , which as you would expect, includes all the old classics such as Space Invaders and Pac-Man. However, I think the inclusion of Duck Hunt should be more of a generation later as it took longer to become popular than the other 4, but still nonetheless a classic game.
All the game listed in the post are great and will stir up nostalgia to older gamers, but I invite you to sample some of the new and enjoyable offerings by developers (often independent) that are hitting the App Store and support them rather than the big game companies, such as Namco.
First up is Bit Pilot, reviewed last week – think of Asteroids but without the use of weapons and the addition of an excellent (unlockable) soundtrack. You can’t go too wrong for 59p, so I recommend downloading it, if only to sample the cool beats.
Secondly, and I’m sure many readers will have this already, but for those who may have missed it, Canabalt. It’s a fantastic, adrenaline-fueled game, which we first discovered in the summer of ‘09 playing on the desktop browser. Try it first at www.adamatomic.com/canabalt/ and then if you like it, buy it for the good value price of £1.79 (cheaper than Pac-Man!)
Thirdly, there’s a recent download to our iPhone, titled Vectron (Return to 1979). This is a Space Invaders style game controlled by on the on-screen joystick and fire buttons. But I must warn you it’s very difficult but fun as a cheap alternative to Space Invaders. Once again only 59p.
Finally, we recommend playing Piyo Blocks for fans of Bejeweled, which has cute pixel art. However, I should point out that it hasn’t been developed by an independent company but it’s got that 8-bit vibe about it due to the pixel art.
We would like to hear about retro and classic arcade games that you might have found on mobile devices. Plus any cool independent games which need to be supported, so feel free to get in contact or comment below.
