SuperRope

Every week a new game arrives on the App Store hoping to be the best and most successful game of it’s genre or sub genre. SuperRope is the latest addition to the casual ‘endless vertical’ category where it’s all about what score/height you can reach. We’ve seen classics like DoodleJump, Bird Strike and Mega Jump in recent years, so what does SuperRope have to bring to the table?

Well, first of SuperRope is available free but don’t let that fool you, as like most free games it offers IAPs to recoup the development cost; and I have to say, that [Craneballs Studios] have made it extremely difficult to explore new characters and levels without making a purchase. You need a minimum of 1000 ‘funky’ stars to unlock a new character and in the average game played (based on my performance) it will take me 100 turns to achieve this, otherwise I can take the hit of 69p to obtain this or go all out and get 5000 stars for £1.99. Seen as SuperRope is free, 69p isn’t such a big deal, but I feel the game is lacking in entertainment to make this value for money.

Essentially SuperRope uses the same game engine of the aforementioned games but dressed up differently, the hero must leap from rope to rope avoiding the enemies and falling obstacles. Powerups and bonus items are on hand to make the journey more exciting and balance the difficulty level. The cutesy cartoon style graphics are easy to look at the artwork for the intro screens is polished, however, the UI could be designed a little more intuitively, especially where the ‘back’ button is concerned.

The audio is a little too harsh for me but I suspect with the 4+ rating that Craneballs Studios are targeting children under 10’s, who will likely respond better to the game’s music and sfx than I do.

So overall, SuperRope has decent graphics and easy controls but annoying audio, plus it’s free (ish). Great for kids but then so is MegaJump.
