@FoursakenMedia have created a real winner with Bug Heroes Quest (in fact all their titles are some of the best iOS games available), with the level of depth, character development and storytelling offered in this game. Fans of Bug Heroes, their first title with this property, will already own Bug Heroes Quest (I’m positive), so I don’t really need to preach to the converted, but you readers, who may have missed Bug Heroes, he’s what you can expect.
Bug Heroes Quest delivers explosive action, in a RPG style with beautifully rendered 3d environments and a frame rate to match. The character design of the bugs is superb with artwork which is sometimes dark and moody and sometimes colourful andvibrant but always captures a sense of fun and humour. I’ve counted over 45 enemy bugs listed in the ‘Insectopedia’, which enables users to discover the weak points (if any) when fighting them. So already there is a wealth of engagement and exploration to have with dispatching these evil bugs, let alone immersing yourself in the fantastically story Foursaken have weaved. I would go as far to say that on the strength of the narrative, Bug Heroes Quest could easily be adapted into a comic or even animated shorts and I’ve only completed 62% of the game!
I should point out here, that casual game players shouldn’t let the involved story and RPG element put them off, as Foursaken have created bite-size missions which often only last a couple of minutes, so you are able to jump in and out of the game at will. Obviously your progress is saved (what developer worth his salt wouldn’t include this option), but these short missions allow players instant user satisfaction. There is also an award given to your level of achievement on the particular mission, either gold, silver or bronze, and you can repeat play to better this.
The control system is once again the trusted dual-thumb system, ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!’ – so users shoot, slash and whack their way through the game using the right thumb and then control the bug’s movement with the left thumb, easy. You play as one of the original 3 bug heroes (Ant, Beetle & Spider) and get to level up your skills and upgrade your weapons as you progress throughout the many levels and missions. Some levels require a particular hero to complete the mission, but many have the familiar option to swap your hero at anytime during the battle.
The only negative I have with the game and this is me being very picky, is the soundtrack. The sfx are once again excellent and the sound bites funny but there is something about the looping soundtrack which bugs me (no pun intended!). At first it didn’t really bother me but after a few days of constant playing I got a little bored with it and just played with only the sfx on. This is a very minor issue and certainly not a reason not to buy this amazing game, but I just thought I’d bring it up as the soundtrack to NY Zombies was so good I instantly downloaded it when Foursaken Media made it available for free at the beginning of the year.
Before I ramble on anymore, please buy this game and support this indie company of 4 brothers, you won’t be disappointed. It goes without saying that Bug Heroes Quest is awarded 5 stars.
